Data Science Convention is the annual flagship event of the SPE-GCS Data Analytics Study Group. 

Our goal is to achieve SPE’s core values in supporting talented industry professionals, YPs, and students interested in advancing their skill set in the energy and technology industry.

Event includes:

Peter Bernard started his 38 year career with Halliburton in 1984, after graduating from ULL in petroleum engineering. Until his early retirement in 2009 he held multiple roles with increasing responsibility in both the US and internationally, including President/CEO of Landmark Graphics, Sr. Vice President of Business Development and Marketing, Executive Committee member. Mr. Bernard became an industry advisor through his company Pinion Energy and Consulting, which he formed in 2009. He was hired by Kenda Capital (Shell Technology Ventures manager) to serve as Executive Chairman of two of its companies Tendeka (UK based), Zeitecs (US based) and to also advise on several other boards within the portfolio. In 2012 Mr. Bernard was offered an Independent board member seat for US SILICA (SLCA NY:SE), he currently serves on the Audit committee, Executive Committee and Chairman of Nominating and Governance committee.

 

Mr. Bernard was Executive Chairman of C&C Reservoirs a global digital analog and data company in the exploration industry. In 2014 Mr. Bernard was hired to advise Warburg Pincus on investing in the Oil and Gas Service space, Warburg bought 13 different companies from 2014-2019. The companies were rolled up to three separate entities; Rubicon Oilfield Intl where Mr. Bernard was Executive Chairman, Conquest Energy Services and RSEG where he served as advisor and Independent director. RSEG sold to Enverus (February 2020) after successfully tripling revenue and growing EBITDA over 5X in less than 4 years. He has served as Chairman of Datagration since May 2020 and became CEO in late 2021.

In 2017, he was elected as a member of the National Academy of Engineering for his significant theoretical and practical contributions to enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration. He was one of the Distinguished Lecturers of SPE for 2010-2011 term. Dr. Dindoruk was Data Science and Eng Analytics Technical Director of the SPE and a member of the Advisory Committee of the SPE Reservoir Dynamics and Description Tech Discipline. He has been active in various editorial positions under SPE and also Elsevier. Currently he is the Editor In Chief for all SPE Journals and as well as Editor In Chief of Journal of Natural Gas and Eng of Elsevier.

 

Dr. Dindoruk is well-known for his extensive work on thermodynamics of phase behavior/EOS development and experimental work, interaction of phase behavior and flow in porous media, enhanced oil recovery and CO2 sequestration, and correlative methodologies.Recently, Dr. Dindoruk has also been working in the area of data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning and focusing on effective incorporation of data sciences into the oil and natural gas industry practices and energy systems. In recent years, he has authored/co-authored various articles for hydrogen, geothermal systems and adsorptive storage. Before Devon Energy, Uchenna was a research scientist for ENI Petroleum which included a visiting scientist post at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Energy Initiative (MITEI). At MITEI, he was responsible for being an ENI presence on upstream related ENI funded research at MIT. MITEI projects included studying nanoemulsion EOR mechanisms and modeling hydraulic fracturing. In addition, he was responsible for scouting MIT related startups at the MIT Liaison Program for potential ENI investment. Before Aramco Americas, Devon, ENI, and MIT; Uchenna finished his PhD and MS in petroleum engineering at Texas A&M University. Dr. Yuxing Ben is a reservoir engineer at Occidental, where she develops hybrid physics and data-driven solutions in the subsurface engineering technology group. She was the principal developer of machine learning technology for Anadarko's real-time drilling and hydraulic fracturing platforms. She won the best paper award from URTeC 2019 and was selected as a SPE distinguished lecturer for 2021. She has over 17 years of experiences in oil and gas industry. Her work has resulted in the publication of over 30 papers and the granting of three US patents. She earned a BS in theoretical mechanics at Peking University, and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame.

Tao Lin is a data scientist at Aramco Houston Research Center, focusing on machine learning research and applications in oil and gas. He holds a PhD degree in Physics from University of California at Riverside. Prior to current role, he worked in CGG for High Performance Computing (HPC) and machine learning (ML) applications in seismic imaging, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) for ML algorithm optimization, and Amazon Web Services (AWS) for cloud computing and ML consultation in oil and gas industry. Currently in Aramco Houston Research Center, Tao leads the research projects on integrating novel machine learning and digitalization technology into geoscience and O&G production, such as AI-based petrophysical properties characterization, production optimization and seismic imaging, as well as sustainability and emission monitoring.
