Career Strategies for Engineers in the Digital Oilfield

Leveraging the Operational Value of AI and Machine Learning for Production Intelligence

Most people working in the oilpatch in the summer of 2014 had never known a prolonged downturn. But in the 1980s and ’90s, it was the norm. Join us as we hear from Ed Cowsar, CEO of OspreyData, and Venkat Putcha, Sr. Data Scientist at OspreyData, as they share their experiences on surviving past oil price crashes, the lessons learned and how to prepared for the future of the industry.

OspreyData is a Production Optimization technology (funded by Houston Ventures) focused on the digital enablement of Operations and Production to lower Lease Operating Expense with a Machine Learning based software application that detects and informs of suboptimal conditions and makes suggestions for changes in operating that lower well downtime and increase production.

Dr. Venkat Putcha has been with OspreyData since late 2017, joining the company shortly after obtaining his Ph.D. in Petroleum Engineering at Penn State. During the last 10 years, he has explored the facets of simulation, field-work, and data science, targeting one central aspect of optimizing petroleum production systems. He received his Bachelor's in Chemical Engineering in 2009 from NIT Trichy, India. Following obtaining that degree, he worked as a production engineer for 3.5 years at ONGC, the largest oil and gas operator of India. From 2013-2017, as a Ph.D. researcher, he worked on integrating physics-based simulation with machine learning for gas lift optimization. As Senior Data Scientist at OspreyData, Venkat has led the charge in developing AI-based solutions that target inefficiencies for gas lift and other lift types. He is focused on delivering insights and solutions by developing diagnostic and predictive artificial intelligence (AI) models that target key artificial lift operational issues.

Ed Cowsar is uniquely suited to lead OspreyData, having over 30 years of expertise in Software and Energy. Ed grew up in oil and gas in production and drilling in the oil fields of Texas and on Amoco and Mobil Oil offshore platforms. He transitioned to digital initiatives early by delivering robotics solutions for GE’s Ruska Instrument and helping launch Enterprise Software and Business Intelligence platforms for Kronos Labor Accounting and SAP Supply Chain solutions. He ran high growth business units at Oracle and was instrumental in taking Infinium Software public where he lead their sales force and had a successful Wall Street IPO. He recently helped start the oil and gas produced water recycling firm Energy Water Solutions, which lowers production costs in the Eagle Ford Shale, Permian Basin, Fayetteville Shale and Marcellus Shale. He is an active speaker on Production Intelligence, Change Management, Technology Innovations and is an active volunteer in prison ministries. Ed has a B.S. in Industrial Distribution from Texas A&M University’s College of Engineering.
