Description

We are in the middle of a technological revolution. Applications of machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI), and data science have a great impact on many areas of our lives today and in the foreseeable future. This revolution has been driven by the collection of large amounts of data, as well as the availability of software tools thanks to the accelerated growth of open source initiatives. The success of these approaches is undeniable as it is proven by many applications with a significant impact on our daily lives. Given the obvious success of AI in many different areas, it would be fair to ask how it has impacted aspects of the oil and gas industry and, more specifically, the reservoir simulation technology. In this talk, we discuss the typical characteristics of a successful AI application to assess which of those applications have a good chance of success. Finally, we illustrate these concepts by showing an example where computer vision is combined with reservoir simulation to address a reservoir history matching problem.
