Horizontal well drilling has taken a significant leap forward. The challenge of maturing oil fields and diminishing areas of “easy oil”, created a need for a new generation of wells, better known as Maximum Reservoir Contact ("MRC") wells, which improve recovery and sweep in a cost effective manner.
MRC wells are defined as having an aggregate reservoir contact in excess of 5 km, through a single or multi-lateral configuration. In low permeability reservoirs, MRC wells were designed to maximize reservoir contact and achieve well productivity at much higher levels than those of limited contact horizontal wells (e.g. 1 km). Results have indicated a 4-5 fold increase in PI when compared to offset 1-km single lateral wells. Unit development costs were also significantly reduced, with as much as a 5-fold reduction when compared to offset 1 km laterals.
Using MRC wells, large offshore areas can be developed with far fewer wells than pre-1990 technology would permit. These benefits point to MRC wells as a disruptive technology, giving new life to what might have been considered non-economic reservoirs.
