Profile:
Dr. Doreen Chin is a surface engineering discipline advisor in Upstream Unconventionals for Shell Exploration and Production Co. She earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston.
Doreen has more than 26 years experiences in the power generation and petroleum industries, and in academia, including technology development, engineering design, analyses, research, teaching. She was named Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) in 2011.
Doreen’s expertise and experiences in Oil and Gas industry include transient and steady-state multiphase flow and thermal analysis; safe and cost effective management of flow assurance risks; subsea processing/subsea production system design, production system operability and maintainability; as a project FA team lead for various projects (majors/marginal fields; green/brown fields) from Assessment, Selection, Definition, Execution, to First Oil; onshore shale production facilities; coordination/interface of multiple disciplines.
Doreen has published one technical book and 44 papers. She is the
- two-time recipient of the OTC/ASME Arthur Lubinski Best Paper Award, 2011 and 2004.
- Recipient of the ASME Petroleum Jacobson Best Paper Award, 2001
Doreen has been elected by the Board of Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) as the Program Committee Chairperson of OTC 2014. She also serves in ASME Petroleum Division Executive Committee, and Industrial Advisory Board in ME of University of Houston.

Topic summary:
One of the tasks of Flow Assurance (FA) Engineers is to ensure the production flow and to prevent unexpecteddeferment caused by solid depositions in the petroleum production systems. In the past two decades, flow assurance technologies have been maturing along with the development of fundamentals associated with the formation, precipitation, and flocculation of the solids, and with the deep understanding of fluid characteristics and flow in production systems.
The role played by Flow Assurance Engineers in a project not only includes providing predictions, but also prevention strategies, and remediation methods in the case that the occurrence of solids deposition blocks pipelines and jeopardizes production. Flow Assurance Engineers are also responsible for providing the prediction and interpretation of the fluid characteristics, the flow hydraulics and thermal behaviors, the performance of the production system, and the guidance of operation strategies.
