Automating Reservoir Engineering Tasks: PTA, RTA and beyond

Abstract:

The need for automating reservoir engineering (RE) tasks, especially in pressure and rate transient analysis (PTA/RTA), initially arose from the increasing volume of data recorded by permanent downhole gauges. This challenge was addressed by introducing smart filtering, shut-in identification algorithms and processing platforms, allowing seamless analyses update with newly collected data. Recent cutting-edge solutions now go beyond adapting large datasets to manageable sizes for an engineer – they automate workflows across various RE disciplines and make results readily available for other processes, enabling the use of data analytics tools and workflows.

KAPPA-Automate is a dynamic data automation platform that is scalable and built on a containerized micro-services architecture. It is designed to automate workflows and provide data – whether raw or processed – and analysis results to a wide range of applications. The platform continuously runs tasks as new data flows in, it can communicate with other systems via an API, and includes a Python SDK, allowing engineers to customise critical workflows and focus on decision-making, a task only humans can perform. Key workflows that would be presented during this talk include incremental PTA, incremental RTA, virtual metering, recurrent surface to bottomhole pressure conversion, and connecting to data analytics. Additionally, PTA and RTA solutions provided as micro-services address important challenges such as reducing the uncertainty in model interpretation, maximizing the value of data analysis even with low-quality data, and integrating PTA/RTA with other systems.
