Mars Rover 2012 Competition
Primary(Grades 3-5) and middle school (Grades 6-8) students interested in science and engineering have participated in the design and construction of a model of a Mars Rover to carry out a specific science mission on the surface of Mars.
The models are mostly mock-ups, constructed at a minimal cost (estimated cost of less than $10-$25) of mostly found objects and simple art supplies. Some teachers supplied students with a low cost ($10) solar powered car kit or a low cost RC car to serve as the chassis.
Solar-powered, RC, and free-form models will participate separately. The students built the models as part of a 6-week fall semester classroom-learning or homework project on Mars. The students were given design criteria for a rover, and were required to do basic research on Mars that determined the operational objectives and
structural features of their rover.
Please come and help on January 28th in the Houston Room of the University Center. There are two separate sessions.
Judge registration starts at 8 am and 12 noon; there will be 45 min training class sessions
at 8:30, 9:15, 12:30 and 1:15; and judging will take place 10:00-11:30 and 2:00-3:30.
