A Message from Our Chairman Sid Smith

Chairman's Corner - September

Gulf Coast Section,

I would like to welcome you on behalf of the SPE-GCS Executive Committee and Board of Directors. We are excited about the new team and together, we are prepared to tackle the aggressive goals and objectives laid out during the Kickoff meeting August 22nd. During the year, I will share with you our progress against these objectives and update you on the health of our section. Under the leadership of James Pappas in 2002/2003, our section made great progress and I want to personally thank him for his guidance and council. His contribution, and that of our past board gives me the confidence to start the year with enthusiasm and support.

The goals achieved this past year illustrate excellent examples of a focused organization. I am proud to share with you the SPEi Presidents Award for Section Excellence which was awarded to the GCS for the 5th Year in a row! Together with your support, we will strive to achieve that milestone again in 2003/2004. Even more impressive were the (10) individual awards given to GCS members for their contribution to our society and industry for Distinguished Member, Distinguished Service, Drilling Engineering, Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, Lester C. Uren and Young Member Outstanding Service. I''m certain you all join me in extending our congratulations and appreciation for these members continued service to our society.

The focus for the new year will be topic for future articles but I wanted to start the year sharing our goals/objectives for the section.

Short Term Goals

  • Leadership Development - Succession Planning
  • Financial Responsibility and Oversight
  • Technology Transfer and Continuing Education
  • Study Group Growth

Long Term Goals

  • Develop closer relationship with SPEi
  • Support sister Engineering Societies/Groups
  • Publicity - Understanding our role as a Technology Organization vs. a Public Policy Organization
  • Closure of the Long Range Plan

An organization of this size requires commitment not only from its leadership but also its membership. I look forward to hearing ways the Board can assist you in your quest for success and I in turn will share ways you can help our section initiatives. Volunteers are always needed and I encourage to you step forward and get involved in a Study Group, Committee or Activity. The reward is multiplied by the effort and I guarantee your contribution will be both measurable and appreciated.

All the best.

Sid Smith
