Volunteers may depart before noon, or stay for the Special Interest judging session that will be held in the afternoon

SPE-GCS Executive Breakfast

The Gulf Coast Section recently hosted SPE President Behrooz Fattahi in Houston at the Executive Breakfast. President Fattahi delivered an impromptu presentation on the key themes of his presidency and answered questions from the attendees. As the SPE Gulf Coast Section Chair, I delivered an update on activities in the section. A booklet of volunteers in section committees and study groups was distributed. This year's deadline has passed and applications are no longer being taken for 2010. This year the application process for the SPE Gulf Coast Section Undergraduate Scholarship will be completed online. The application is for $1,500/semester and all applications are due by February 8, 2010. Though the application is not due until February, it is important to familiarize yourself with the application process as soon as possible. I started out on the program committee of the Northside Study Group in 2003. I later became the program committee chairperson in 2006 and then the vice chair for the Northside Study Group in 2007. 2010-2011 SPE GCS Board of Director Nominees Selected The SPE Gulf Coast Section board of Directors approved the following slate of officers and directors as nominees for 2010-2011 at the December 2009 board meeting. According to SPE GCS bylaws (see Governance under About SPE GCS on www.spegcs.org), this slate will stand as elected unless an alternative candidate (or candidates) is put forth by February 15, 2010. If, by that date, a petition for an alternative candidate is signed by 100 active SPE GCS members, an election will be held at a meeting in May with at least 50 active SPE GCS members in attendance. Other open board positions for 2010-2011 will be appointed by the incoming section chair. Enrich Your Area High School Student's College Experience

The Gulf Coast Section is hosting career fairs throughout the Houston area in the upcoming month of November. These career fairs are intended to reach out to high school students as they prepare for college and steer them towards a possible career in the oil and gas industry. By sharing your college and/or professional experiences with them, you can help inform future graduates of the many opportunities available in our exciting industry.

The Young Professionals are looking for volunteers to give short presentations, answer questions and talk to students at the SPE booth, and give practical engineering demonstrations from the Magic Suitcase or Energy4Me kits. If you are interested in participating in this event with the YPs, please contact Lucas Smith at Lucas_Smith@ryderscott.com or Xuan (Sun) Harris at xuan.harris@gmail.com for further information and to receive future updates on the event.

Community Services New Initiative

Calling all "Do It Yourself" people with a desire to give back to the community. SPE GCS is looking to participate in Rebuilding Together Houston’s Safer Home Program wheel chair ramp construction program.

Many people in our community are not able to leave their homes without assistance. Rebuilding Together Houston identifies these homes, designs the ramps, and we provide the labor. What is needed is a volunteer crew of 5 to 10 individuals of carpentry skills and helpers.

Timing is flexible and the task size can be adjusted to the crews skill level.
